ATC Prepared to Offer Sponsorship and In-Kind Support

Crowdsourcing Already Successful at Campus PopUp Showcase

(DURHAM, NC) – January 23, 2019 – Building off the successful run of revolving small businesses in its PopUp retail and restaurant space, American Tobacco today issued a call for submissions pitching a new campus event.

Dubbed “The Triangle’s Next Great Event Challenge,” the application window is open now through February 15 for event planners, nonprofit groups, concert promoters, tech evangelists, sports enthusiasts and everyone in between to make their case for why and how their dream event will tap into a widely shared interest and enhance the community.

Assuming the pitches meet the criteria in the call for ideas, American Tobacco Campus’ selection team will choose a partner to sponsor, which will receive in-kind use of the facility, sponsorship support and expert support from the campus’ seasoned events staff.

Organizers are seeking event ideas that will engage diverse audiences; connect with the arts, technology, education and/or sports; and have a person and/or team running the event with a proven track record. Events that are political or religious in nature will not be considered.

The application process is open now. Interested groups can apply and review the rules and evaluation process HERE.

“Since the campus’ redevelopment more than a decade ago, we’ve hosted roughly one million people on campus each year for events ranging from fun runs to concerts to tech unveilings,” says Valerie Ward, CPCE Director, Marketing & Events. “Our location and assortment of venues have proven extremely effective.”

Adds Adam Klein, Director of Strategy at Capitol Broadcasting Co., which owns the American Tobacco Campus, “We’ve worked with grassroots groups and industry pros to pull off events never before seen in the Triangle, and we’re excited to work with a new class of dreamers to bring big ideas and big crowds to the campus. Our events challenge is another way we are actively contributing to Durham and the Triangle’s culture of innovation and discovery.”

The Triangle’s Next Great Event Challenge is partly inspired by the success of PopUp @ American Tobacco Campus, a regular and revolving showcase of new retail entrepreneurs and their concepts. From spring rolls to beard wax and many inventive things in between, the space located in one of the country’s largest and most acclaimed historical redevelopment projects, has become a go-to spot for sampling the hottest and most exciting trends our region has to offer.

Soul Cocina and Chocolatay Confections to Bring International Cuisine to 2019 PopUp @ American Tobacco

Plant-based Latin Dishes and Award-winning Confections Bring Global Taste to Durham Feb. 7-22

(Durham, N.C.) – January 22, 2019 – Silvana Rangel-Duque along with Matthew and Danielle White may have different backgrounds, but each of them brings something unique to Durham – globally-inspired food made from scratch.

Soul Cocina, Rangel-Duque’s Latin-American eatery, prides itself on its plant-based food with an emphasis on local and gluten-free ingredients. Born in Colombia, Rangel-Duque learned the art of food and the importance of agriculture. She brings this passion for fresh food and her knowledge of age-old traditions to the Triangle in the form of delectable dishes like tamales and pasteles de yuca.

Rangel-Duque started Soul Cocina in 2015 with the goal to bring innovative food to people from all walks of life.

Drawing inspiration from the other side of the globe, Matthew and Danielle White created Chocolatay Confections where they craft European-style treats by hand. They make a variety of tempting treats like bonbon bars, brittles, pralines, and caramels. In fact, their Sunflower Crunch Cup received a Good Food Award in 2018.

Matthew and Danielle White moved to Chapel Hill in 2012 and began Chocolatay Confections to share the joy of chocolate with others.

SoulFresh Spring Rolls to Kick-off 2019 PopUp @ American Tobacco

Veteran-run, Healthy Fast Casual Restaurant to Serve Hungry PopUp Customers Jan. 3-31

For Justus McGee, owner of Soul Fresh Spring Rolls, the heat of the kitchen is nothing compared to previous roles as one of eleven children in a working family household, an Army Paratrooper serving in Afghanistan and an elementary, middle and high school teacher.

Throughout his entire life and all of his past endeavors, cooking remained a passion he knew he would pursue one day.

“I can’t remember a time I wasn’t cooking,” says Justus. “I can recall watching my Grandpa Arthur create feasts for our entire family inspiring me to consider a career making people happy through food. I whipped up my first BBQ sauce at ten which I served my fellow soldiers in front of the barracks at Fort Bragg on Smoke Bomb Hill and still serve to this day in the form of our Black is Beautiful BBQ Sauce.”

Justus made his passion and dream a reality in 2017 in the form of the SoulFresh Food Truck.

SoulFresh produces unique spring rolls with fresh and minimally processed ingredients. Their combinations created through a much more healthful grilling method (vs. frying) include Chickpea Broccoli Mushroom, Buffalo Chicken Kale and the popular Thanksgiving Roll. SoulFresh uses organic vegetables, spices, and non-GMO foods that they source as locally as possible including from area farmers markets.

“Justus is the type of entrepreneur we created the PopUp experience to feature,” says Adam Klein, director of strategy at Capitol Broadcasting Company, which owns the campus. “He’s served his country, his community and now he has the opportunity to serve all of the Triangle’s restaurant patrons a unique menu of healthy, fresh and delicious food.”

East Durham Bake Shop moves into American Tobacco Campus with pie pop-up

“Pie is perhaps the most important part of Thanksgiving, the warm spice of pumpkin, the rich sweetness of pecan.

The new pop-up space at the American Tobacco Campus will become pie central next month as East Durham Bake Shop moves in.

Married owners Ali Rudel and Ben Filippo are no strangers to pop-ups, having run their pie and pastry business, then known as East Durham Pie Company, for years with weekly stops at breweries or farmers markets. This spring they finally opened their pastry shop in a brightly renovated building on Driver Street in East Durham.

The ATC pop-up is all about Thanksgiving, running from Nov. 5 to 21, serving pies from the bakery’s seasonal menu and pastries. Similar to their own shop, Rudel and Filippo also will serve coffee, tea and juice. The shop will sell pie by the slice for those immediate cravings or whole to take home.”

Local Bakery Taking Orders for Thanksgiving in American Tobacco’s PopUp Space

(Durham, NC) – Thanksgiving preparation begins early for business owners Ali Rudel and Ben Filippo. This entrepreneurial pair runs East Durham Bake Shop and will set up a Thanksgiving holiday PopUp @ American Tobacco from November 5th-21st and they’ve already begun taking orders

East Durham Bake Shop started in 2015 as a one-person operation selling whole pies to order and hand pies to local cafes. The duo turned their dream of opening a storefront in Old East Durham into a reality this spring. The shop offers a variety of handmade and seasonally inspired pastries from croissants, cookies, and scones to sweet and savory pies. With a focus on using local North Carolina produce, East Durham Bake Shop believes in spending its food dollars locally whenever possible.

“Pie carries deep family and cultural traditions, and therefore so many wonderful memories for a lot of people,” says Ali. “We often hear people tell stories about their parents, relatives and those who have since passed away when we talk to them about pie. It’s a food that changes depending on what we have in abundance and brings people a specific happiness.”

Ali and Ben’s passions for meticulously crafting handmade baked goods and serving the local community will go hand-in-hand this holiday season. The shop will be serving handmade pies from its Thanksgiving menu, freshly baked pastries, Carrboro Coffee Roasters coffee, organic tea, and fresh bottled juice. Customers will be able to preorder baked goods for Thanksgiving or enjoy slices and pastries in-shop.

“Durham, especially its small business owners and entrepreneurs, is filled with such enthusiastic and creative people who have always made us feel welcome, loved and supported,” says Ali. “We are proud to be a part of this community and to be able to provide a little slice of happiness this Thanksgiving.”

Keep up with East Durham Bake Shop by following them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The East Durham Pie PopUp space will be open Monday-Friday 8 am – 2 pm.
