PopUp @ American Tobacco Campus Announces First Tenant Following Avalanche of Applications for Rotating Retail Showcase

(Durham, NC) – August 6, 2018 – PopUp @ American Tobacco Campus will launch with small batch, artisan coffee roaster Caballo Rojo, Monday, August 20 through Friday, August 31.

The small business is one of 40 that applied to test their products and retail strategies in the 1,400 sq ft space at 359 Blackwell St. in the Diamond View III building, optimally located between the main campus, Durham Bulls Athletic Park, and the Durham Performing Arts Center.

At least two more PopUp announcements are expected in 2018 as new companies rev up for their turn in the revolving showcase. If you run a small, retail-oriented business and would like to apply for a spot, please visit www.PopUpDurham.com.

“This is a huge opportunity for our small business as we look to expand our operations into the Triangle’s fast-growing retail market,” says Gabriela Wilberding, owner of Caballo Rojo and whose family has long worked in the coffee industry. “I’ve honed my skills as a barista and coffee roaster and even studied the importance of the global coffee industry at UNC-Chapel Hill. I’m ready to provide a unique experience and excellent cup of coffee to the thousands who come to the campus every day.”

Caballo Rojo will feature freshly brewed coffee roasted by Gabriela. They will offer pour overs, drip coffee, and cold brew as well as bags of freshly roasted coffee and merchandise. Their hours will be from 7 a.m. to 1 p.m. Monday through Friday.

“We are excited for Caballo Rojo to bring small batch, artisan coffee to more people in Durham–as they head to work or gather for a meeting,” says Adam Klein, director of strategy, Capitol Broadcasting Company. “In the coming months, we’ll be featuring more delicious eats and drinks as well as fashion, housewares and other exciting small businesses in this unique space.”

A Home for the Holidays – Last Call for Builders!

American Tobacco Campus once again partnering with Habitat for Humanity of Durham to make a difference this holiday season. The ultimate goal is to fund and build one tiny 500-sq-ft home in Durham.

To get there, we’re looking for 16 sponsor organizations to contribute $2,500 each and then participate in the construction of a holiday playhouse betwen now and September 30. Each playhouse will be displayed at ATC and auctioned off during the annual Winter Wonders celebration.

Prior to being auctioned off, the playhouses will be on display in Diamond View Park throughout the holiday season. Visitors to DPAC and ATC will have the opportunity to stroll through the playhouse village and bid on the houses, late November through December.

Sponsors can jump to secure their build between now and May 31 — but the sooner, the better. Each sponsor will supply 16-18 workers for a team day of building their playhouse, under the tutelage of Habitat for Humanity. The playhouses can be as creative as its builders’ imaginations — and they can showcase the sponsor’s brand.

Contact Jennifer McFarland at jmcfarland@durhamhabitat.org, or 919. 247.8254 to learn more and schedule your build!

POLITICO worked with Stateline at the Pew Trusts to find the most millennial cities in the U.S. We factored in things like the city’s GDP, how many millennials live there, and how they get to work.
