PopUp Fever Spreads at American Tobacco Campus

American Tobacco’s PopUp fever is spreading down Blackwell Street. In addition to the wildly popular PopUp @ American Tobacco, the retail space’s Diamond View neighbor at The Bullpen will soon host temporary restaurant and retail concepts. The additional space will meet the overwhelming response from both small business owners and consumers for the PopUp concept.

The first retail partnership will be underway on Nov. 5 with American Underground Startup Stampede team Beard and Lady, an all-natural, apothecary-inspired personal care and grooming products for men and women.

They’ll wrap-up their tenure at The Bullpen on Small Business Saturday, Nov. 24, and will re-open in the original PopUp @ American Tobacco space Dec. 12-23.

In addition to Beard and Lady, The Bullpen will also host a one night only collaboration between NC Oyster 365 and Bull Durham Beer to celebrate the release of the latter’s Winter Ale on Nov. 16. Tickets for the event can be purchased here.

“Our goal for the PopUp @ The Bullpen is to bring in exciting retail concepts and restaurateurs and pair them with our Bull Durham Beer favorites as well as seasonal selections,” says Ryan Trecartin, Events and Marketing Manager, Bull Durham Beer. “Across the country, we’re seeing this great intersection of food, beer, and small business retail come together to offer their community a unique experience.”

Ryan and the teams at The Bullpen and Bull Durham Beer have opened their application process for additional PopUp concepts and interested small business owners can apply via the PopUp @ American Tobacco site: popupdurham.com.

East Durham Bake Shop moves into American Tobacco Campus with pie pop-up

“Pie is perhaps the most important part of Thanksgiving, the warm spice of pumpkin, the rich sweetness of pecan.

The new pop-up space at the American Tobacco Campus will become pie central next month as East Durham Bake Shop moves in.

Married owners Ali Rudel and Ben Filippo are no strangers to pop-ups, having run their pie and pastry business, then known as East Durham Pie Company, for years with weekly stops at breweries or farmers markets. This spring they finally opened their pastry shop in a brightly renovated building on Driver Street in East Durham.

The ATC pop-up is all about Thanksgiving, running from Nov. 5 to 21, serving pies from the bakery’s seasonal menu and pastries. Similar to their own shop, Rudel and Filippo also will serve coffee, tea and juice. The shop will sell pie by the slice for those immediate cravings or whole to take home.”

Local Bakery Taking Orders for Thanksgiving in American Tobacco’s PopUp Space

(Durham, NC) – Thanksgiving preparation begins early for business owners Ali Rudel and Ben Filippo. This entrepreneurial pair runs East Durham Bake Shop and will set up a Thanksgiving holiday PopUp @ American Tobacco from November 5th-21st and they’ve already begun taking orders

East Durham Bake Shop started in 2015 as a one-person operation selling whole pies to order and hand pies to local cafes. The duo turned their dream of opening a storefront in Old East Durham into a reality this spring. The shop offers a variety of handmade and seasonally inspired pastries from croissants, cookies, and scones to sweet and savory pies. With a focus on using local North Carolina produce, East Durham Bake Shop believes in spending its food dollars locally whenever possible.

“Pie carries deep family and cultural traditions, and therefore so many wonderful memories for a lot of people,” says Ali. “We often hear people tell stories about their parents, relatives and those who have since passed away when we talk to them about pie. It’s a food that changes depending on what we have in abundance and brings people a specific happiness.”

Ali and Ben’s passions for meticulously crafting handmade baked goods and serving the local community will go hand-in-hand this holiday season. The shop will be serving handmade pies from its Thanksgiving menu, freshly baked pastries, Carrboro Coffee Roasters coffee, organic tea, and fresh bottled juice. Customers will be able to preorder baked goods for Thanksgiving or enjoy slices and pastries in-shop.

“Durham, especially its small business owners and entrepreneurs, is filled with such enthusiastic and creative people who have always made us feel welcome, loved and supported,” says Ali. “We are proud to be a part of this community and to be able to provide a little slice of happiness this Thanksgiving.”

Keep up with East Durham Bake Shop by following them on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.

The East Durham Pie PopUp space will be open Monday-Friday 8 am – 2 pm.
